Guillaume Papillon, peintre et peintre verrier au cœur de la vie artistique toulousaine de la fin du XVe siècle

    • In the geography of the painting produced in France during the 15th century, Toulouse remains one of the great unknows. The Southwest only retains rare vestiges of painted panels, but its stained glass heritage, brought to light by the publication of the volume of the Recensement des "Vitraux du Midi de la France" (2020), is much richer. While the majority of the monumental stained glass windows remain anonymous, documentary sources reveal the names of numerous practitioners, such as the painter and stained glass painter Guillaume Papillon (died before 1505). Originally from Pont Saint Espirit in Provence and installed in Toulouse since the 1460s, this artist was awarded all the major commissions, reaching as far away as Mende (Lozère) and Dax (Aquitaine). Although none of his documented works has survived, his long and fruitful career assesses his competences as well as his place in this artistic life of Toulouse. Based on an important quantity of archival documents, this article proposes the reconstruction of the personality and the social and artistic surroundings of this artist in search of social ascent, as well as taking into consideration the occupations of painters and stained glass painters, united at the end of the 15th century within the same corporation and within the same confraternity dedicated to Saint Luke.
