Resumen de La huella y la representación del otro: los musulmanes en el callejero madrileño

La ciudad de Madrid contó con una presencia islámica histórica a lo largo de más de 700 años, desde la fundación de la ciudad en tiempos del Emirato hasta la época morisca. Este artículo analiza cómo se refleja esa huella histórica en la toponimia urbana, tanto en las denominaciones conmemorativas contemporáneas como en las de carácter costumbrista. Para ello se analizan las denominaciones registradas desde 1835 y se atiende a las narraciones históricas o legendarias que vinculan determinados lugares del callejero con la presencia islámica (habitualmente concretada en la figura estereotipada del moro), a partir del examen de diversas obras de referencia sobre toponimia madrileña. Se analizan asimismo las representaciones gráficas alusivas a dicha presencia que existen en determinadas calles. El artículo muestra que si bien la presencia islámica histórica (andalusí, mudéjar y morisca) es un elemento relevante en la historia madrileña, está escasamente reflejado en la toponimia urbana, lo que podría ser síntoma de una dificultad para integrarlo en el patrimonio y la identidad colectiva.

The city of Madrid had a historical Islamic presence for more than 700 years, from the founding of the city in the time of the Emirate to the Moorish era. This article analyzes how this historical trace is reflected in the urban toponymy, both in contemporary commemorative names and in those of a traditional character. To do this, the names registered since 1835 are analyzed and the historical or legendary narratives that link certain places on the street with the Islamic presence (usually specified in the stereotypical figure of the Moor) are analyzed, based on the examination of various reference works on Madrilenian toponymy. The graphic representations linked to such presence that exist in certain streets are also analyzed. The article shows that although the historical Islamic presence (Andalusian, Mudejar and Moorish) is a relevant element in Madrid's history, it is scarcely reflected in urban toponymy, which could be a symptom of a difficulty in integrating it into collective heritage and identity.
