Resumen de El concepto de μῆνις en la Ilíada: una visión desde los diccionarios y las metáfrasis bizantinas

  Hasta la fecha la mayor parte de las traducciones que se han realizado de la Ilíada recogen el término μῆνις en castellano como «cólera». En el siguiente artículo trataremos de precisar el significado del término μῆνις a partir de los diccionarios tardoantiguos y bizantinos y de otras fuentes complementarias, con la intención de definir con la mayor precisión posible este término y tratar de determinar si la relación entre μῆνις y «cólera» es adecuada. Sin embargo, el estudio de este término no puede ser aislado, sino que también será necesario un análisis de los términos que comparten campo semántico como ὀργή, κότος o μνησικακία. El resultado de este estudio demostrará que la traducción del término μῆνις como «cólera» en español es fruto de un largo y complejo proceso de simplificación lexicográfica y cuyo significado no recoge los dos valores primitivos del término griego, es decir, intensidad y finalidad. Asimismo, la relación de μῆνις con aquellos términos del mismo campo semántico pone de manifiesto que entre ellos había una jerarquización semántica atendiendo a los dos valores previamente señalados.

  Most of the translations that have been done of the Iliad into Spanish render the term μῆνις as «cólera» («anger»). In this article, we will try to precise the meaning of μῆνις by resorting to Late Antique and Byzantine dictionaries and other complementary sources, with the intention of defining this term as accurately as possible and trying to determine if the relation between μῆνις and «cólera» is appropriate. However, the study of this term cannot be achieved in isolation, and so an analysis of the terms that share the same semantic field such as ὀργή, κότος or μνησικακία will also be necessary. The results of this study will demonstrate that the translation of the term μῆνις into «cólera» in Spanish is the result of a long and complex process of lexicographical simplification and its meaning does not express the two primitive values of the Greek term, that is, intensity and aim.

  In addition, the relationship of μῆνις to the terms that share the same semantic field shows that among them there was a semantic hierarchy if we attend the two primitive values previously indicated.
