The same action, that of laughing, has a different sense in Euripides’ Bacchae depending on the context and, above all, on the character who carries out the action. For this author, laughter is an important element in the characterization of Dionysus and Pentheus and of the attitude of both towards each other respectively: the hybris of a theomach in the case of the king and the calmness and superiority of a god aware of the fact that nothing can be done by humans against him, in the case of Dionysus.
