    El artículo problematiza la relación entre religión y libertad a través del análisis de la circulación de una noticia de alcance global en la prensa española: el secuestro en 1858 del niño judío Edgardo Mortara por parte de la Inquisición romana. El análisis de la recepción de la noticia en un reino sin libertad religiosa permite problematizar el vínculo entre catolicismo y liberalismo a través de tres ejes: el poder temporal del papado, la intransigencia religiosa y la relación entre ley canónica y derechos naturales. Se demuestra que el asunto desató un debate entre los fieles católicos sobre la Inquisición, la legitimidad de la disidencia y un derecho natural emancipado de la tutela del pontífice.

    This paper problematizes the relationship between religion and freedom through the circulation of an international media story in the Spanish press: the 1858 kidnapping of a Jewish boy, Edgardo Mortara, by the Roman Inquisition. The analysis of how the news was received in a kingdom without religious freedom opens the way for an inquiry into Catholicism and liberalism along three axes: the temporal power of the papacy; religious intransigence; and the relationship between canon law and natural law. This paper shows that the affair sparked a debate among the Catholic faithful about the Inquisition, the legitimacy of dissent and the formulation of natural rights free from the tutelage of the pontiff.
