La figura del ingeniero tinerfeño Agustín de Betancourt es de una importancia trascenden- tal. Fundador de la Escuela de Caminos, Canales y Puertos de España, realizaría su importante labor científica en España, Francia, Inglaterra, y, finalmente, en Rusia. En este último país, tuvo la confianza absoluta del zar Alejandro I. Fundó la Escuela de Vías de Comunicación, donde se formaron los ingenieros rusos. Y, desarrolló el trazado urbanístico de la capital, San Petersburgo
Agustín de Betancourt, an engineer from Tenerife, is a leading figure with a transcendental importante. Founder of the School of Roads, Canals and Ports of Spain, he would carry out his important scientific work in Spain, France, England, and, finally, in Russia. In this last country, he had the absolute confidence of Tsar Alexander I. He founded the School of Comunication Roads, where Russian engineers were trained, and developed the urban layout of the capital, Saint Petersburg.
