El cuerpo del apóstol Santiago fue “descubierto” en los primeros decenios del siglo IX, durante el reinado de Alfonso II de Asturias. Con este monarca dio comienzo la peregrinación jacobea y fue impulsado el culto a las reliquias, iniciativas acompañadas de un arte áulico que formaban parte de un proyecto de construcción nacional. Aquella fue una política epígona de la desarrollada contemporáneamente por el gran Carlomagno, inmerso en la construcción de un imperio germano-cristiano y con quien la corte asturiana estuvo relacionada.

The body of the apostle Santiago was “discovered” in the early decades of the 9th century, during the reign of Alfonso II of Asturias. With this monarch the Jacobean pilgrimage began and the cult of relics was promoted in the kingdom. Those initiatives were accompanied by an aulic art and they were a part of a national construction project. It was an epigone policy of the one developed at the same time by the great Charlemagne, who was immersed in the building of a German-Christian empire and with whom the Asturian court was related.
