La importancia e interés que han tenido las minas de Almadén es bien conocida en el ámbito minero, pero su valor histórico, cultural, económico y social transciende ampliamente dicho terreno. El que hayan estado en explotación, con diferentes métodos y para distintas utilidades, durante tantos siglos es buena muestra de ello. No obstante, se han tenido que cerrar sus instalaciones por el cese de actividad para que muchos investigadores, de los más diversos campos del saber, se pongan a indagar y reconstruir en las múltiples facetas que formaron su pasado. Esperemos que esta aportación contribuya a enriquecer y ampliar lo que ya sabíamos sobre estas Reales Minas de Almadén y Almadenejos durante las últimas décadas del siglo XVIII y el primer tercio de la centuria decimonónica. Quien va a guiar nuestros pasos por esa etapa histórica va a ser un burgalés de origen y almadenense adoptivo: Francisco Carlos de la Garza (1757-1832). Con ello queremos poner de manifiesto algo muy obvio, pero que conviene no olvidar, que entonces y ahora las grandes compañías mineras las forman personas, además de procedencias y culturas muy diferentes. Fueron en realidad esos hombres y mujeres los que con no pocos esfuerzos y fatigas mantuvieron en funcionamiento el establecimiento minero.

The importance and interest that the Almaden Mines have had is well known in the mining sector, but its historical, cultural, economic and social development transcends the field. The fact that they have been in operation, with different methods and for different uses for so many centuries, is a good example of this. However, the closure of their facilities by the cessation of activity has led to many researchers, of the most various fields of knowledge, to investigate and to rebuild in the multiple facets that formed their past. Let us hope that this contribution will help to enrich and extend what we already knew about these royal mines of Almaden and Almadenejos during the last decades of the 18th century and the first third of the nineteenth century. A Burgos born man who later became a honorary citizen of Almaden is going to guide our steps throughout this historic stage: Francisco Carlos de la Garza. By doing this, we would like to highlight something very obvious, but that it should not be forgotten, that both then and now the large mining companies are made up by people of very different backgrounds and cultures. In fact, these were men and women that with great effort and kept the mining facilities running.
