Entre Divertidas aventuras del nieto de Juan Moreira (1911) y El juguete rabioso (1926), Buenos Aires deja de representarse como mero escenario literario para convertirse en un espacio urbano moderno que busca su relato. En esa búsqueda, los protagonistas de ambas novelas reescriben el modo literario de la picaresca, pero, mientras el primero consigue articular los mecanismos para escalar socialmente, el personaje de Roberto Arlt experimenta la incapacidad de responder adecuadamente al mensaje de la ciudad para conseguir el mismo objetivo: Silvio Astier se verá inmerso en una ciudad progresivamente ilegible que terminará por expulsarlo. Así, el personaje de Roberto J. Payró plantea una continuidad entre la ciudad y su trayecto: el espacio recoge y habilita su ascenso; en cambio, Silvio advertirá una suerte de incompatibilidad con el entorno que lo irá arrinconando hacia la quiebra moral y la abyección. De ahí surgen dos estrategias narrativas diferenciadas que sintonizan los procesos modernizadores que vive la ciudad con la emergencia de la novela moderna argentina.

Between Las divertidas aventuras del nieto de Juan Moreira (1910) and El juguete rabioso (1926), Buenos Aires ceases to be represented in the literary narratives as a mere literary scenario and becomes a modern urban space in search of its own story. In this search, the protagonists of both novels rewrite the picaresque literary mode, but while the former manages to articulate the mechanisms for social ascent, Roberto Arlt’s character experiences the inability to respond adequately to the message of the city to achieve the same goal: Silvio Astier will be immersed in a progressively illegible city that will eventually expel him. Thus, Roberto J. Payró’s character poses a continuity between the city and his journey: the space gathers and enables his ascension; however, Silvio will notice a sort of incompatibility with the environment that will push him towards moral bankruptcy and abjection. This gives rise to two differentiated narrative strategies that synchronize the modernizing processes undergone by the city with the emergence of the modern Argentinian novel.
