El presente trabajo se ocupa de la relación intelectual entre Walter Benjamin y Carl Schmitt. Su punto de partida viene dado por la célebre misiva de Benjamin a Schmitt a propósito de El origen del Trauerspiel alemán, así como por las referencias a Teología política que cabe encontrar en la obra benjaminiana sobre el barroco. Sin embargo, a continuación se demuestra la importancia de La dictadura, de Carl Schmitt, para la caracterización benjaminiana del soberano barroco y, por tanto, su carácter de referencia oculta para Benjamin. La última sección del trabajo está dedicada a la lectura schmittiana, tanto pública como privada, de El origen del Trauerspiel alemán, así como a las críticas que Schmitt vierte sobre Benjamin, relativas ante todo a su incapacidad para comprender la diferencia entre el Hamlet de Shakespeare y el Leviatán de Hobbes

This paper deals with the intellectual relationship between Walter Benjamin and Carl Schmitt. It takes as starting point Benjamin’s famous letter to Schmitt on The Origin of German Tragic Drama as well as Benjamin`s mentions of Schmitt’s Political Theology in his work on the Baroque. Nevertheless, I prove the importance of Schmitt’s book on Dictatorship for Benjamin’s portrayal of sovereignty during the Baroque period and therefore its character of hidden reference for the Jewish thinker. The last section is devoted to Schmitt`s public and private reading of The Origin of German Tragic Drama and to his critique of Benjamin’s Habilitationsschrift, namely his incapacity of understanding the difference between Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Hobbes’s Leviathan
