Felipe Centeno es un personaje cuya importancia todavía hoy se sigue cuestionando, pese a aparecer en cuatro novelas de Benito Pérez Galdós, y ser protagonista absoluto de El doctor Centeno. Diversos han sido los investigadores que han tratado su relevancia, coincidiendo, la mayoría de las veces, en sus valoraciones. Partiendo de esta base, el presente estudio se centra en la figura de este héroe para profundizar en diferentes aspectos del mismo. Teniendo en cuenta que el novelista lo presenta poco a poco, sin terminar de dar los suficientes detalles para que los lectores tengan una visión nítida y concisa de él, logra mantener el interés sobre su persona, sobre todo porque al final de Marianela el narrador advierte que va a volver a recuperar al personaje. Estas y otras razones son las que, todavía hoy, pueden hacer que nos preguntemos: ¿quién es Felipe Centeno?, ¿de verdad Galdós no le da un protagonismo claro ni siquiera en la novela cuyo título alude a él específicamente?

Felipe Centeno is a character whose importance is still questioned today, despite his appearance in four of Benito Pérez Galdós’ novels, especially in El doctor Centeno. There have been various researchers who have dealt with the relevance of it, coinciding, most of the time, in the valuations of it. Starting from this base, this study focuses on the figure of this hero to delve into different aspects of it. Taking into account that he presents it little by little, without giving enough details so that readers have a clear and concise vision of him, he manages to maintain interest in his person, especially because at the end of Marianela the narrator warns that he is going to get the character back. These and other reasons are the ones that, still today, can make us wonder: who is Felipe Centeno? Does Galdós really not give him a clear role, not even in the novel whose title specifically alludes to him?
