Resumen de “La escuela y la vida”: Una lectura pedagógica a la idea de Escuela Nueva en Agustín Nieto Caballero

La escuela y la vida, en cuanto expresión genuina del pensamiento pedagógico del intelectual Agustín Nieto Caballero, brinda claves importantes para comprender la manera como la idea de Escuela Nueva fue posible en Colombia y América Latina y, además, contiene elementos inspiradores para pensar la escuela en los momentos actuales, el rol del maestro y el estudiante, el propósito de la enseñanza-aprendizaje y la relación de la educación con otros ámbitos de la realidad. Si existe una Escuela Nueva es porque también hay una “escuela vieja”, pero no se trata de un asunto cronológico sino de espíritu. Por eso, el presente artículo intenta responder a la pregunta ¿qué es lo que hace nueva la escuela? O mejor aún, ¿cómo hacer de la escuela un lugar de vida y no simplemente un lugar que prepara para la vida? Para ello, en la primera parte, se presentan algunos trazos de la biografía intelectual de don Agustín Nieto Caballero, junto con una aproximación a la obra La escuela y la vida que, en la segunda parte, desembocan en una reflexión sobre los centros de interés, el ambiente y actividades propias de la Escuela Nueva, y el lugar del maestro. Todo ello para actualizar las intuiciones de Nieto Caballero en un tiempo que nos exige recrear la educación desde la perspectiva de un nuevo humanismo.

La escuela y la vida, as a genuine expression of Agustin Nieto Caballero pedagogical thinking, provides important keys to understand how “new school” idea was possible in Colombia and Latin America, and contains inspiring elements for thinking about school at present time, teacher and the student’s role, teaching-learning purpose, and educational relationship with other areas of reality. If there is a new school it is because there is also an old school, but it is not a chronology matter but of spirit. That is why, this article attempts to answer the question: what makes a school new? Or better yet, how to make school a place of life and not simply a place that prepares for life? For this, the first part presents some traces of Agustin Nieto Caballero’s intellectual biography together with an approach to his work La escuela y la vida which, in turn, leads to a reflection about interest centers, new school environment and activities, and teacher place in the school. All this to update Nieto Caballero’s intuitions for a time that requires us to recreate education from a new humanism perspective.
