Resumen de Gait analysis of knee osteoarthritis patients using DyCare Lynx

D. Rodríguez Rodríguez, Montse Nuevo Gayoso, S. Prat Fabregat, M. Puig Vidal, Ricardo Ignacio Jauregui Telleria

  • Osteoarthritis, and knee osteoarthritis in particular, is one the most prevalent diseases in the elderly. A system based on Inertial Measurement Units, DyCare Lynx, was chosen to carry out a preliminary clinical study, in collaboration with Hospital Clínic, aiming to compare the gait patterns of 3 groups conformed by 10 volunteers each: young healthy adults, elderly healthy adults and elderly adults diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis. It has been demonstrated that the combination of a sensor on the thigh and another on the shank can detect statistically significant differences between knee osteoarthritis patients and healthy elderly volunteers, the former having 10o shorter angle peaks in stance and swing. Healthy young and elderly adults walk in the same manner, statistically. Monitoring of physiotherapy with an objective system like this, more reliable than current subjective tools, could potentially make the treatment more effective, ultimately avoid knee arthroplasty and therefore increase quality of life.
