State aids received and their association with olympic performance from brazilian sports confederations

    Objetivo: El presente estudio tiene por objetivo analizar si las inversiones realizadas a través de la Ley Agnelo-Piva a ciertas confederaciones deportivas han determinado el logro de buenos resultados olímpicos. Para ello, se tomó como hipótesis central que a mayor inversión realizada, mayor participación y obtención de medallas olímpicas. Métodos: Para el análisis, utilizamos como muestra las confederaciones deportivas de deportes olímpicos de verano que recibieron fondos públicos a través de la Ley Agnelo-Piva entre los años 2002 y 2016. Resultados: Fue posible verificar que los resultados deportivos no ocurren a través de una perspectiva de causa y efecto, es decir, las confederaciones deportivas que reciben la mayor cantidad de recursos no siempre son las que presentan el mayor número de resultados olímpicos. Conclusión: La hipótesis central del estudio pudo ser refutada; considerando que los resultados no ocurren a través de una perspectiva de causa y efecto pensado a corto plazo y que no siempre las confederaciones que reciben la mayor cantidad de recursos son también las que tienen el mayor número de resultados olímpicos.

    Objective: The objective of this study is to analyze whether the investments made through the Agnelo-Piva Law to certain sports confederations have determined the achievement of good Olympic results. For this, it was taken as a central hypothesis that the greater the investment made, the greater the participation and the obtaining of Olympic medals. Methods: For the analysis, we use as a sample the summer Olympic sports sports confederations that received public funds through the Agnelo-Piva Law between 2002 and 2016. Results: It was possible to verify that sports results do not occur through a cause and effect perspective, that is, the sports confederations that receive the greatest amount of resources are not always those that present the greatest number of Olympic results. Conclusion: The central hypothesis of the study could be refuted; considering that the results do not occur through a perspective of cause and effect thought in the short term and that not always the confederations that receive the greatest amount of resources are also those that have the greatest number of Olympic results.
