    En su testimonio autobiográfico titulado In the Shadow of the American Dream (1998), el artista multidisciplinario estadounidense David Wojnarowicz narra su lucha contra el virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana (VIH) que se lo llevó a los 37 años ¿De qué manera se organiza la narración en el diario íntimo del autor? ¿A través de qué modalidades de escritura este diario consigue dar cuenta de una experiencia epidémica tanto individual como colectiva? Al poner en perspectiva el texto con otras obras contemporáneas, tanto anglófonas como francófonas, la autora de este artículo examina, en primer lugar, el carácter fragmentario y discontinuo del relato. Luego, analiza las elecciones léxicas y metafóricas a través de las cuales Wojnarowicz consigue no solo poner en palabras su experiencia de la enfermedad, sino también hacer visible toda una comunidad de activistas que luchan por existir y hacer valer sus derechos.

    In his autobiographical testimony In the Shadow of the American Dream (1998), American multidisciplinary artist David Wojnarowicz narrates his fight against the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) which he died of at the age of 37. What is the narrative stucture of the author’s personal diaries? How does he express an epidemic experience that is both individual and collective? By putting the text into perspective with other contemporary works, both English and French, the author of this article first examines the fragmentation and the discontinuity of the narrative. Then, she analyzes the lexicon and the metaphors by which Wojnarowicz not only describes his experience of the disease, but also makes visible a whole community of activists who struggle to exist and to assert their rights.

    Dans son témoignage autobiographique intitulé In the Shadow of the American Dream (1998), l’artiste pluridisciplinaire américain David Wojnarowicz narre son combat contre le virus de l’immunodéficience humaine (VIH) qui l’emporta à l’âge de 37 ans. De quelle façon la narration s’organise-t-elle dans le journal intime de l’auteur ? Par quelles modalités scripturales ce dernier parvient-il à rendre compte d’une expérience épidémique à la fois individuelle et collective ? En mettant en perspective le texte avec d’autres ouvrages contemporains, aussi bien anglophones que francophones, l’auteure de cet article examine premièrement le caractère fragmentaire et discontinu du récit. Puis, elle analyse les choix lexicaux et métaphoriques par lesquels Wojnarowicz parvient non seulement à mettre en mots son expérience de la maladie, mais aussi à rendre visible toute une communauté d’êtres militants qui luttent pour exister et faire valoir leurs droits.
