    Las funciones del museo han cambiado considerablemente a lo largo de las décadas. Esta tecnología particular, que puede remontarse (en su acepción moderna) a la Ilustración, se basó durante mucho tiempo en el principio de la colección, utilizada por un lado para la investigación y el desarrollo del conocimiento, y por otro lado para la comunicación y la discusión de la ciencia y el arte. La apertura del museo al público en general, así como su progresiva comercialización (su función turística y económica) han transformado en gran medida la naturaleza del espacio del museo. Duncan Cameron, ya en la década de 1970, se refirió a las diferencias fundamentales entre la función del templo y la función del foro cuando se ejercen por el museo. Los debates en torno a la definición del museo, en Kioto en 2019, permiten comprender los cambios radicales que se han producido a este respecto en los últimos decenios, excluyendo en gran medida lo que durante mucho tiempo fue la esencia del museo. Esta transformación de significado no está exenta de consecuencias en la naturaleza del espacio museístico, pero también en la redefinición de los límites de la institución dentro del ámbito museístico.

    technology, which can be traced back (in its modern meaning) to the Enlightenment, was for a long time based on the principle of the collection, used on the one hand for research and the development of knowtedge, and on the other hand for communication and the discussion of science and art. The opening of the museum to the general public, as well as its progressive commercialisation (its tourist and economic function) have largely transformed the nature of the museum space. Duncan Cameron, as early as the 1970s, referred to the fundamental differences between the function of the temple and the function of the forum when exercised by the museum. The discussions on the definition of the museum, in Kyoto in 2019, provide an insight into the radical changes that have taken place in this regard in recent decades, largely excluding what was for a long time the essence of the museum. This transformation of meaning is not without consequences for the nature of the museum space, but also for the redefinition of the limits of the institution within the museum environment.
