Japanese learners of L2 Spanish often fail to perceive the lexical stress in Spanish, especially in rising intonation contexts. This means that L1 Spanish speakers and Japanese learners use different strategies to perceive the lexical stress in such cases. The results of a perception experiment with 52 L1 Spanish speakers and 37 Japanese students suggest that the Japanese learners use the timing of pitch rise in some contexts, while the L1 Spanish speakers make more use of syllable duration.
