Resumen de Phonetics of different targets in spanish-english bilingual productions

Mehmet Yavas

  • Three different targets of English, with different levels of stricture / sonority- aspirated voiceless stops, dark laterals, and reduced vowels- are investigated in the production data by Spanish- English bilinguals. Acoustic analyses compared the bilingual productions of these targets with those of English monolinguals. Results reveal different degrees of monolingual-like productions in these three targets by bilinguals. Long-lag stop productions are monolingual-like (no significant differences between the two groups), while schwa productions are clearly not monolingual-like (significant differences between the two groups). Productions of laterals stand in between; while they are not completely similar to those of monolinguals as in the long lag stops, they are not as non- monolingual-like as in the reduced vowels. These differences in the productions of different targets show a correlation with the sonority / level of stricture / fortition of the targets.
