According to the cross-disciplines motto provided in this Conference, my paper focuses on the interdisciplinary dimension of a phonological fact not yet observed by normative grammar in Spanish: the faculty of mid vowels (/e/, /o/) to perform a marginal role in the syllable structure, as it happens in the oral regular utterance of many sequences involving these two mid vowels and the open (/a/). After a quick overview of the currently accepted Spanish vowels classification according to their structural role, this paper will approach its topic from a chronologic point of view, starting with Tomas Navarro’s Spanish Pronunciation Handbook (1918), to analyse instrumental evidence and eventually discuss the normative predicament regarding structural functions of the mid vowels in Spanish.
