The aim of this work is analysing the perception of intonational phrase boundaries in Brazilian Portuguese, discussing the relation between the judgment about how the prosodic boundary is perceived by listeners and the role of phonetic cues for the perception of this type of prosodic boundary. Two experimental designs were developed and applied: one forced-choice task of pause identification and one production test. The sentences used in both experiments were the same. For the first experimental test, the sentences were recorded, manipulated acoustically and used as auditory stimuli. In the second, the sentences were produced by different participants. The results of each test show the role of phonetic cues to characterize as the production as the perception of the boundary. Both experiment’s combined results allow us to discuss different theoretical views on aspects involved in the process of speech perception.
