    • Trend surface analysis (relief data in this case) represents a mathematical methodology used to separate the topographic data, from a DEM, into its main components: regional and local fluctuations. According to Grohmann (2005) regional trends can be computed from polynomial surfaces of different orders. On the other hand, residual values, which correspond to local fluctuations of the analysed variable, represent the arithmetic difference between the real data and the trend surface obtained. From the results, a preliminary conclusion can be suggested, the distribution of residuals is not random, but has a good relationship with different geomorphological zones in the Madrid Basin. Moreover, the presence of high residual values would also be indicative of the existence of possible disturbances of tectonic character determining the configuration of the relief in the study area.
