  • Dendrogeomorphology has been used since the 1960s to estimate sheet erosion rates. However, uncertainties resulting from following the standard dendrogeomorphic method have not been taken into account. In this regard, here it is argued that the published rates could be inconsistent in terms of accurately measured sheet erosion. As a first step to address this debate, we have used plaster replicas of complex soil-exposed roots to characterize the abovementioned uncertainty. To this purpose, we have sampled 9 exposed roots and their vicinity. We have observed that estimates obtained from the standard method could have some uncertainty. This is due to the non consideration of soil micro-topography and because height measurements of the eroded soil layer are taken where soil and roots converge, which is not representative of the rate at which the erosive process acts
