  • Estimating historical rates of sheet erosion represents a challenge in areas with a long land use history. In this paper, a methodology based on analyzing the morphology of tree stems, exposed roots and surface micro-topography by means of data obtained with a Laser Terrestrial Scanner is presented. Using the base of tree stems and exposed roots, the initial level of the surface was estimated. On the other hand, an existing tree growth model was applied to the trees in the study area in order to estimate their age. Finally, with the antecedent surface, the current surface and the estimated age of every tree, soil erosion rates were calculated. Preliminary results showed historical rates for 3 trees in the study area with values ranging from 7.47 to 9.24 t·ha-1·y-1. These preliminary results indicate an increase in soil erosion during the last century with the highest rates for the youngest trees
