The Veleta Cirque (Sierra Nevada) still contains ice masses that are relics of the larger glaciers from the Little Ice Age. These ice masses are receding, and the process is controlled primarily by snow cover duration and land surface temperature. In this work a total of 14 Landsat images were used, from August 2007 to August 2008, to estimate the snow cover extension. The Normalized Difference Snow Index (NDSI) is usually used with this purpose, considering the presence of snow for NDSI values above 0.4. The aim of this study is to analyze the viability of lower thresholds for spring and summer images, as these seasons the snow cover becomes thinner and is covered by sediments and this standard threshold may not be optimal for mapping snow cover. The results show that reducing the threshold for spring and summer images is feasible since images are not affected by clouds or important changes in topography.
