  • Resumen
    • Storms constitute an important source of risk in coastal zones. A comparison between different methods for creating storm hazard maps was performed in La Victoria beach (Cádiz). Maximum wave run-up was calculated for storms with diverse return periods, using an empirical model, based on literature and on an experimental correlation between storm surge and wave height, and a numerical model (XBeach), used for simulation of wave processes and beach profile changes. GIS tools were applied for combining water level and a LiDAR DEM of the area, obtaining the maximum run-up line and the dry beach width, which is the basis for the hazard maps. Results show that total wave run-up is more accurately simulated by the numerical model, while the empirical model is adequate for calculating erosive run-up but underestimates the flood risk. The maps were integrated in a prototype early warning system within the European MICORE project.
