Las Cooperativas del mar y su relación con las Cofradías de Pescadores

    Las Cofradías de Pescadores existen en España desde el siglo XI; sin embargo las Cooperativas del Mar provienen de principios de este siglo y tienen importancia a partir de 1919. Son fundamentalmente Cooperativas de Producción, aunque también hay algunas Cooperativas de Consumo para la venta de determinados productos relacionados con la pesca. Estas Cofradías de Pescadores, aun teniendo muchos puntos en común con las Cooperativas del Mar, sin embargo no llegan a identificarse. A nivel del Estado español se está intentando fomentar las Cooperativas Pesqueras y existe un Órgano, que es el FROM, dedicado, entre otras actividades, al impulso de esta forma de asociación para mejorar la industria pesquera. Este artículo presenta los diferentes canales y procedimientos representativos que posibilitan a este sector formar parte de la toma de decisiones a nivel de la política comunitaria de la Comunidad Europea.

    Fishermen guilds date back to the 11th century and they have had a relevant role since 1919, whereas Fishermen's cooperatives originated at the beginning of this century. These are basically Producer's Cooperatives although some Consumer's Cooperatives also aim at selling fishing related products. In spite of their resemblance, Fishermen Guilds do not identify themselves with Fishermen's Cooperatives. Spain has deliberatly fostered fishers' co-operatives through 'FROM'. This is the organization in charge of promoting this form of association in order to improve fisheries in the state since they have proved to play an important role in reducing production costs and making the co-operatives more competitive in a market which operates in the actual situation of economic crisis. The study also shows the different channels and representative procedures of this sector, which enable them to take part in the community policies of the EC.
