Resumen de Refugiados no Forte de Caxias no contexto da Guerra Civil de Espanha (1936-39)

Este artigo pretende abordar um aspeto particular do fenómeno do refúgio republicano espanhol em Portugal que se relaciona com a passagem de refugiados pelo Forte de Caxias no decorrer da Guerra Civil de Espanha. Com o início do conflito, inúmeros espanhóis fugiram da violência da guerra e das perseguições inimigas e tentaram salvar-se através do país vizinho, encontrando, no entanto, um regime político hostil à sua presença. O governo português, apoiante da causa nacionalista, procurou dificultar a estadia de refugiados espanhóis, sobretudo os de tendência republicana, em Portugal, entregando-os a Franco e concentrando-os nas prisões portuguesas, de que o Forte de Caxias foi um importante exemplo. A partir daqui, onde passaram por inúmeras dificuldades, os refugiados tentaram tratar da sua saída do país e procuraram obter melhores condições de detenção.

This article intends to address a particular aspect of the phenomenon of the Spanish republican refuge in Portugal that is related to the passage of refugees through Forte de Caxias during the Spanish Civil War. With the start of the conflict, many Spaniards fled the violence of war and enemy persecution and tried to save themselves through the neighboring country, however, finding a political regime hostile to its presence. The portuguese government, supportive of the nationalist cause, sought to hinder the stay of Spanish refugees, especially those of republican tendency, in Portugal, handing them over to Franco and concentrating them in the Portuguese prisons, of which Forte de Caxias was an important example. From here, where they went through countless difficulties, the refugees tried to arrange their departure from the country and sought better conditions of detention.
