    The concerns about moral conduct played a major role, directly and indirectly, in the legislative and bureaucratic production during the Middle Ages, often associated with the process of symbolic construction of an image of virtuosity and honor, areas in which the Catholic Church and the Crown sought to intervene. Consequently, within this relationship between powers, the Crown clearly took the lead in the task of moral guidance of the subjects of its kingdom. This essay, based on the Manueline statutes of the Studium, aims to study the royal intervention in the Portuguese university in the early 16th century, in particular on the moral regulation of its elements. More specifically, based on the university regulations subscribed by king Manuel I in 1503, this article intends to identify the statutory production of moral normatives that regulated the work and action of men belonging to the group of officers of the University of Lisbon.

    As preocupações com a conduta moral ocuparam um papel preponderante, direta e indiretamente, na produção legislativa e burocrática da idade média, muitas vezes associada ao processo de construção simbólica de uma imagem de virtuosidade e honra, na qual intervieram a Igreja Católica e a Coroa. Como tal, no âmbito desta relação entre poderes, a Coroa não abdicou de um protagonismo na tarefa de orientação moral dos súbditos do seu reino. O presente ensaio, com base nos estatutos manuelinos do Estudo Geral, visa assim estudar a intervenção régia na esfera universitária portuguesa no início do século XVI, em particular na normatização moral dos seus elementos. Mais concretamente, a partir de um regulamento universitário subscrito por D. Manuel I em 1503, pretende este trabalho detetar a produção de normativas estatutárias de competência moral que regulavam especificamente o trabalho e ação dos homens pertencentes ao grupo do oficialato da Universidade de Lisboa.
