Entre el posible millar de riojanos que se embarcaron hacia el desconocido Nuevo Mundo americano, en la primera mitad del siglo XVI sobresalen los personajes que desempeñaron un papel destacado por su formación dentro de los primeros conquistadores y cronistas, o bien por el desempeño de un alto cargo administrativo en la organización de esa nueva sociedad en formación. Si en el cómputo general de los españoles los riojanos no fuimos muchos, sí dimos fe de nuestra presencia con unos perfiles singulares y distinguidos, como demuestra la biografía de Martín Fernández de Enciso, nacido en la localidad riojana que añade como segundo apellido, y que parece omnipresente en todo lo que tiene que ver con los asuntos de Indias entre 1510 y 1526. Este artículo es un resumen de su peculiar, intensa y activa aportación a la historia de España y América.

Among the thousand of Riojans that sailed towards the American New World in the first part of the sixteenth century, stand out the ones who had significant roles due either to their skills as conquistadors and chronicles or their high administrative position in the organization of this developing new society. Even though the total number of Spaniards from La Rioja in America was not a significant number, our presence was notorious for our singular and distinguished profiles. This is shown for instance in the biography of Martín Fernández de Enciso, born in the Riojan village of Enciso, from where he takes his second last name, and who is notoriously present in everything related to the West Indies between 1510 and 1526. This article serves as a summary of his peculiar, intense and active contribution to the history of America and Spain
