Resumen
- Using an historical overview of the process of territorialization of the Mixtec community of San Juan Mixtepec in the Mexican State of Oaxaca, this article defies common perceptions of identity, community and territory. Aided by a methodology developed by the social studies of science, the social apparatus implied in the construction of places and territories as “a matter of fact” is reviewed and the process of place construction itself is seen as reproducing the social forms of inequality of a given time. Contrasting with the “naturalizing” constructions of place and territory, in this document I suggest that today’s Mixtecs share a complex perception of the concept of place which is at the same time “modern” and “traditional”.
