La zarzuela “Gran Vía” y la asistencia hospitalaria en el Madrid del siglo XIX

    Se aborda a lo largo de este artículo la asistencia hospitalaria en el Madrid del siglo XIX y la repulsa de sus ciudadanos a ser ingresados en aquellos hospitales o nosocomios, como queda recogido en sus expresiones más castizas y populares como era la zarzuela, en especial por el prurito de su sentido de la "honra" y la mala opinión que sobre ese tipo de beneficencia tenían, a pesar de los esfuerzos llevados a cabo desde las instancias oficiales, que no produjeron el efecto deseado, y muchas de las medidas fueron tan efímeras como lo fueron los gobiernos del momento, lo que llevó a numerosos eruditos a pronunciarse sobre una necesidad clamorosa como era la de atender al menesteroso, incluido al enfermo; deplorando el estado de este tipo de asistencia, siempre con escasos recursos; al mismo tiempo que se produce un intenso debate sobre la beneficencia privada y la pública.
