Even the most pessimistic forecasts did not foresee that the Taliban would be able to unleash a nationwide offensive that would cause the collapse, in a matter of weeks, of the Afghan Defence and Security Forces and the fall of the government. For many analysts, operations such as the one undertaken by the international community in Afghanistan will not be repeated in the future. However, it should not be overlooked that a world as unstable as the current one will force us to face similar conflicts in the future, which forces us to consider the lessons learned in 20 years of conflict. In analysing the outcome of this conflict, it should be borne in mind that there is no single cause for the Taliban victory; that the necessary information is still incomplete and, in many cases, classified, and that the reasons for the collapse of the Afghan state are not limited to what happened in the last two years.
