La odontología en los animales jóvenes, considerando como jóvenes desde el nacimiento hasta los 5 años, momento en el que toda la dentición debería ser permanente, es de gran importancia ya que podremos prevenir muchas patologías. Los caballos podrán tener muchos problemas con el cambio de la dentición decidua a la permanente y la erupción de los molares permanentes. Si el animal no puede aprovechar bien la comida en este periodo no crecerá todo lo que debería y eso afectará a su posterior rendimiento deportivo. También será el periodo en el que se empiecen a montar por lo que será especialmente importante revisarlos antes de este momento.
