Coastal wetlands and salt marsh areas show a high natural and heritage value, from a scientific, conservational or natural beauty, and they are often the habitat of threatened species. La Pletera salt marshes (NE Catalonia) are the focus of a Life+ project, whose aim is to restore this area and to protect a threatened fish species (Aphanius iberus). In this study, hydrochemical and isotopic analyses are conducted to determine the importance of groundwater in this natural system, as well as to point out its value as hydrogeological heritage. Hydrochemical and evaporation models show that groundwater maintains these ecosystems during dry seasons, even though evaporation may be higher than 45%. Therefore, the Pletera case highlights the importance of groundwater as hydrogeological heritage, due to its intrinsic and functional value in the maintenance of the biological heritage, as well as its interest from the scientific and educational point of view.
