  Las infecciones respiratorias por virus sincitial respiratorio (VSR) constituyen un problema de salud a nivel global. El VSR es el principal agente etiológico de las infecciones respiratorias agudas bajas del lactante que requiere hospitalización.

  Por sus características patogénicas y epidemiológicas es un virus altamente contagioso y ocasiona brotes epidémicos todos los años durante las épocas frías.

  Por lo anteriormente descrito así como para evitar las secuelas que los niños afectados puedan tener en su vida adulta se deberían establecer medidas epidemiológicas concretas que permitan contener los brotes estacionales, así como informar a la población de las medidas preventivas que se pueden adoptar con el fin de evitar la infección de los niños con este patógeno.

  El presente artículo tiene como objetivo realizar una revisión bibliográfica de los recursos disponibles sobre el virus sincitial respiratorio, aportando una descripción del virus, manifestaciones clínicas más frecuentes, relación entre infección y otras patologías y medidas preventivas para evitar la infección o reducir la gravedad de la misma.

  Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections are a global health problem. RSV is the main etiologic agent of acute lower respiratory infections in infants requiring hospitalization.

  Due to its pathogenic and epidemiological characteristics, it is a highly contagious virus and causes epidemic outbreaks every year during cold seasons.

  For the aforementioned, as well as to avoid the aftermath that affected children may have in their adult life, specific epidemiological measures should be established to contain seasonal outbreaks, as well as to inform the population of the preventive measures that can be adopted in order to avoid the infection of children with this pathogen.

  The objective of this article is to carry out a bibliographic review of the available resources on respiratory syncytial virus, providing a description of the virus, the most frequent clinical manifestations, the relationship between infection and other pathologies, and preventive measures to avoid infection or reduce the severity of the disease.
