One of María Rosa Menocal's most striking legacies will be the very public stand she took by following through with publication of The Ornament of the World in the aftermath of 9/11. In her response to new realities, articulated in part in a postscript she composed in November 2001, she seems to acknowledge the community-forming functions of 9/11 – the inevitability (perhaps even desirability) of accessing the past through the prism of an anguished present. At the same time, however, she misses an opportunity to confront contradiction head on, apply pressure to her own notions of a “culture of tolerance,” and ask the hard questions that can only be articulated through full engagement of the body.
