The participation of children in high level sports events is growing and has been influencing the large access to the systematic process of sports training, which results in the proposition of expectations and requirements incompatible with the early ages, besides that it may result in motor development problems. Considering this worry, the study aimed to verify the relation between the motor development level and the performance of specific abilities in football players aged 10 and 11 years old. Were assessed 12 football athletes of the young category, of a club from the city of Juiz de For a-MG, Brazil. Was applied a questionnaire to collect the inclusion criteria, the Motor Development Scale (Rosa Neto, 1996) to assessment of the motor development and specific football tests. Was applied the descriptive statistic to the characterization of the sample and comparison between the groups and the Spearman Correlation to test the relation between the performance of the specific motor abilities and the level of motor development. Was used the SPSS 16.0 software and a significant level of p<0,05 was adopted. A negative motor age of eight months was verified and no correlation between the global motor abilities and the specific of football was found. The results suggest that the early specialization may be acting negatively on the motor development of the subjects.
