Sources do not particularly attend to women and Las Navas de Tolosa, neither their direct experience of the battle, nor the impact of the battle on their status in the aftermath – although they tell us more than we might expect. More significantly, current historiography of medieval women suggests that such watershed events do not fit with the continuities and changes of women's experience over time – an experience which varied not only according to gender but also according to class and religion in the high middle ages.
