Resumen de Las Navas and the restoration of Spain

Damian J. Smith

  • Many of the leaders on the Christian side at Las Navas soon became deeply aware of the significance of their victory. Equally, Muslim writers considered the battle a turning point in the history of al-Andalus. Historians now would now generally tend to give more weight to long-term weaknesses in Andalusi society and the growing strengths of the Christian kingdoms than to the outcome of an individual battle. Nevertheless, there is a slight tendency to exaggerate Almohad weakness and Christian strength in providing explanations for the completion of the Christian conquest. It might not have mattered in the long term if the result of Las Navas had been different, but history is sufficiently unpredictable for us to give some weight to the events which actually happened.
