This article aims to contibute to the further analysis of liberated Africans, a category of compulsory workers created in the wake of the 1831 law that prohibited the Atlantic slave trade to Brazil.

Divided into two large groups, these africans rendered services to the imperial state, deposited in various institutions or were granted to private bidders, people who paid a rente to the government for the use of these workers’ labor. Articulating the bibliography of the theme theoretically and methodologically based on Social History, we will approach those granted to private bidders using for the analysis the petitions for emancipation from the 1850s, documents produced from Decree nº 1303 of December 28, 1853, which determined the emancipation after 14 years of service provision and the flight announcements of these Africans published in the newspaper Diário do Rio de Janeiro in the 1830s and 1840s. Resistance, accommodation and conflict, based on this tripod, we believe that the role of liberated Africans is inserted in a broad context of processes that contributed to the erosion of the slave institution in Brazil in the 1800s. We will follow the trails of Africans such as Firmo Moange, Juliana Congo, Jorge Mucena and so many others who fought for freedom.
