    O artigo analisa os fundamentos retórico-históricos da História Trágico-Marítima, coletânea com doze relatos de naufrágio escritos entre os séculos XVI e XVII. O livro foi organizado por Bernardo Gomes de Brito e editado em dois tomos (1735-1736) sob amparo da Academia Real da História Portuguesa. Pretende-se, em linhas gerais, compreender os sentidos do gênero histórico e a concepção de trágico em um texto que se ampara em uma concepção providencialista de tempo, ou seja, que desconhece as prerrogativas românticas, expressivas e psicologizantes que tendem a naturalizar e/ou autonomizar categorias como autor, literatura, história e pessimismo.

    The article analyzes the rhetorical-historical foundations of the História Trágico-Marítima, a collection of twelve reports of shipwreck written between the 16th and 17th centuries. The book was organized by Bernardo Gomes de Brito and edited in two volumes (1735-1736) under the auspices of the Academia Real de História Portuguesa. It is intended, in general lines, to understand the meanings of the historical genre and the concept of tragic in a text that is supported by the providentialist conception of time, that ignores the romantic, expressive and psychologizing prerogatives that tend to naturalize and/or autonomize categories such as author, literature and pessimism.
