    This study aims to analyse how the poor in al-Andalus were viewed by the rest of the Muslim community, as revealed by what a selection of Arabic sources has to say regarding the marginalization and the integration of this sector of the population. One must first ask what kind of people made up this social stratum and what events might disrupt the social equilibrium in such a way that poverty was the result. Note is taken of the important distinction between involuntary and self-imposed poverty, which leads to a discussion of the various socio-economic factors involved, as well as the moral and religious issues posed by both types of poverty. Next, the position occupied by the poor in society is reviewed in terms of the degree of acceptance or rejection they aroused in the general population. This allows us to visualise the dynamic implicit in the organisation of social relations, that is, how the interaction between the individual and society was articulated. In this context, one must consider the functional aspects of charity, showing it to be a key factor for the understanding of the interface between social equilibrium and inequality in al-Andalus.

    Este estudo pretende analisar como é que os pobres eram vistos pela comunidade islâmica do al-Andalus através de uma seleção de fontes árabes que abordam a marginalização e a integração deste sector da sociedade. Uma das primeiras perguntas a fazer é que tipo e pessoas integrava este estrato social e que eventos podem ter despoletado a pobreza. De notar que há uma importante distinção entre pobreza involuntária e pobreza pessoalmente imposta, o que leva à discussão sobre os diversos fatores socioeconómicos envolvidos neste fenómeno social, bem como morais e religiosos. Aborda-se ainda como a pobreza era vista em termos de grau de aceitação ou rejeição por parte da população em geral. Isto permite-nos visualizar a dinâmica implícita nas relações sociais, isto é, na interação entre os indivíduos e a sociedade. Neste contexto, devemos considerar a função da caridade, sublinhando como a mesma foi uma peça chave para entender a interface entre o equilíbrio e a desigualdade na sociedade do al- Andalus.
