  • Resumen
    • Terrestrial Laser Scaner measurements (TLS) were conducted in the front of the Maladeta Glacier (Maladeta Peak, 3308 m, Pyrenees 42°38′50″N 0°38′22″E) during the summers 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. The use of TLS allowed precise measurements of the glacier snout altimetry changes in response to environmental fluctuations. 2010 and 2011 were characterized by high summer temperatures and low winter precipitations and the glacier front responded retreating and thinning noticeably: between 1-2 m in the 2010-2011 period and up to 3-4 m in the 2011-2012 period. The high snow precipitations in 2012-2013 resulted in the accumulation of snow even at the front of the glacier; up to 6 m in some spots. However, snow-free areas in the front continued thinning at 1-1.5 m rate. TLS measurements results show that the glacier front responds annually to climate variability, proving the sensitivity of the Pyrenean glaciers as climate change indicators.
