The promontory of La Mola is located in the east of the island of Minorca. Its geological structure consists of folded Palaeozoic rocks (basically shales and sandstones) overlaid by horizontal Cenozoic limestones. Cliffs develops at these cohesive limestones whereas scree slopes develops on top of Paleozoic materials. Gravity processes, essentially collapses, affecting stiff limestones results from two processes: wave action at the base of the cliff and the lateral spreading of Paleozoic shales.
