This article proposes a reinterpretation of an encounter with the Meletians related by Jerome of Strido in Letter 15, addressed to Pope Damasus (366- 384) at some point between 373 and 377. Scholars have interpreted Jerome’s characterization of his repartee with his “heretical” harassers as demonstrating either intransigence on theological matters or lack of awareness of the latest developments in the Trinitarian disputes. A closer reading of the episode shows instead Jerome’s readiness to abide by the prescriptions of the Council of Alexandria (362), which in order to favor reconciliation between the Old Nicenes and the Meletians had conditionally authorized the use of tri-hypostatic language.
