One of the most important traits of modern art is the relinquishing of classical norms of beauty. This article will analyse the various ways in which representations of illness, that is, of imperfection, may have contributed to modern art abandoning beauty as a main goal. To do so, it will focus not only on works by Catalan artists such as Ramon Casas and Santiago Rusiñol, but above all on Pablo Picasso, who was very closely linked to artistic developments in Barcelona at the turn of the century.
