  El Centro Integralmente Planeado (CIP) Bahías de Huatulco, México fue desarrollado con la intención de impulsar el bienestar económico y social de la región. Sin embargo, se ha propuesto que el CIP no puede ser considerado un caso del todo exitoso debido principalmente a los problemas sociales que se han presentado. En este sentido, el presente estudio tuvo como objetivo identificar la percepción de la comunidad local del CIP Huatulco sobre los beneficios y costos sociales que el turismo ha generado en su comunidad. Con base en una encuesta aplicada a 203 residentes de la localidad, se encontró que el turismo ha generado empleos y nuevas oportunidades económicas en la localidad. Asimismo, se reportó que el número de construcciones, el mejoramiento de la infraestructura e incremento en oportunidades de recreación se relacionan con el turismo. Por otro lado, aunque el turismo no se relaciona con incrementos en delincuencia, prostitución y pandillerismo, sí se relaciona con incrementos en la congestión vehicular, en el precio de bienes y servicios y disminución en los espacios de estacionamiento.

  The State-planned tourism destination of Bahías de Huatulco, Mexico, was developed to improve the economic and social conditions of the region. However, it has been argued that the destination cannot be considered totally successful due to the existing social problems that have emerged from the development. This study aimed to identify the perception of Huatulco’s local community towards the social benefits and costs related to tourism in the community. Based on a survey to 203 local residents, it was found that tourism has provided the community with employment and new economic opportunities. Further, it was observed that the increase in the number of constructions, the improvement of infrastructure and the increase in leisure opportunities are related to tourism development in the locality. On the other hand, although tourism is not perceived to be related to the increase in crime, prostitution and vandalism, there was a perception that the phenomenon is related to the increase in traffic, the increase in price of goods and services and the decrease in parking spaces for locals.
