  A partir del siglo XVI se pueden rastrear a nivel documental los cambios experimentados por el sistema defensivo de la villa de Huelva. El viejo castillo fue perdiendo su sentido clásico como fortificación medieval para convertirse en una pieza más del sistema de vigilancia de la costa. Estas funciones se conjugarían con su uso como residencia señorial antes de ser abandonado. Pero si la expansión y desarrollo de la villa restaron protagonismo a las alturas ocupadas por el castillo, la importancia creciente del puerto y el interés por proteger y controlar el acceso a la población desde el mar, dieron lugar a toda una serie de obras y proyectos que se extenderían hasta bien entrado el siglo XIX.

  From the 16t h century onwards, changes that affected the defensive system of the town of Huelva can be tracked down on the level of documentation. The old castle was progressively losing its original value as a medieval fortification to become one more piece of the coastal surveillance system. Along with these functions, the place would also be used as a noble residence before being abandoned. However, even though the town expansion and its development diminished the aspect in the uptown area protected by the castle, the increasing importance of the town port as well as the interest in protecting and controlling its access from the sea led to all sorts of works and projects extended until well into the 19th century
