A comparative analysis was carried out between two classical statistical models of rainfall: the extreme annual value series model, applying the Gumbel distribution, and the partíal duration series method. Both were applied to Campo de Dalias and the southern edge of the Sierra de Gador, a semiarid Mediterranean area. Though the partíal duration series is clearly superior when measuring over a short period of time, the Gumbel distribution far extreme annual values has the advantage of simplicity and speed of application far longer duration series.
