    Se presentan ciertos valores ligados históricamente a la obra pública, como los de utilidad pública, belleza o su carácter representativo y emblemático del poder o una sociedad. Destacamos cómo el sentido de estos principios ha variado a lo largo del tiempo, puesto que su comprensión se integra en un complejo sistema de significados interrelacionados. Corresponde, por tanto, a la ingeniería civil actual redefinir sus principios vertebradores a la luz de los desafíos y horizontes propios.

    This article analyzes the main values that have historically been associated to the civil engineering, such as public utility, beauty, as well as its capacity to embody power or become an emblem of a society ora territory. Through this paper we will address how the meaning of those values have changed throughout the centuries and how these changes are related to an entangled system of beliefs and conceptions about the society and the territory itself. Today, those principies and values of the civic engineering should be reconsidered, in light of the challenges of the twenty first century.
